Near the middle of the 3rd Century BC, Ptolemy II Philadephus, the King of Egypt, was persuaded by the Chief Librarian at Alexandria, Demetrius of Phalarum, to have the Jewish Pentateuch translated into Greek, since Greek was the main language spoken in Egypt.  King Ptolemy then sent his close friend Aristeas, and Andreas the Captain of the Guard, to Jerusalem to ask Eleazar the High Priest, who was also the King of Judea, to provide him with a copy of the Law and Jews capable of translating it into Greek.  The High Priest Eleazar selected the most respectable Scholars of the Hebrew Scriptures that were also well instructed in Grecian literature, and Six Elders from every tribe were sent to Egypt to carry out the wish of King Ptolemy.  They were then taken to the solitary island of Pharos where the translators completed their task translating the Five Books of The Law (see The Works Of Philo, De Vita Mosis, II, Ch. V-VI, and The Works Of Flavius Josephus, Antiquities Of The Jews, XII, Ch. 2).  The remaining books were gradually added to the collection and completed in the 2nd Century BC.
